What information does the author assume the reader knows?.I don’t have any concerns about this book but I will spend some time reinforcing our younger students about not talking with strangers if they are by themselves. De la Pena sends a great message about compassion for the less fortunate. It also teaches them to find the beauty in little things like the rain, the smell in the air, and their experiences with every person that they meet. This story teaches readers about appreciation and about being happy with what they have. It is a great mentor text to teach creative writing at any age. This book is a good mentor text for 3 rdgrade to teach writing stories using dialogues to describe feelings, actions, and the characters’ thoughts. Last Stop on Market Street could be used as a mentor book for writing for 2 ndgrade to teach students how to write narrative stories using details, the sequence of events, feelings, and to describe actions. Students can read the book many times and relay in the pictures to find these themes.Ĭ.7.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text provide an objective summary of the text. They can find the themes of appreciation, the joy of giving, worry, finding of beauty in little things, etc. This book could also be used to teach 7 thgrade students to recognize the different themes that the author used to write the story. CJ’s mood changed from being upset to being happy and glad to be in the Soup Kitchen. It is a great book to teach Inferential about emotions. I’ll use this book in 1 stgrade for Read Aloud to teach predictions as the author didn’t talk about their destination until the end. Last Stop on Market Street could be used at any age to teach multiple standards. He uses Understatement making the reader part of the story and getting involved with the feelings represented in the text. For example the tree under the rain with somebody that is drinking from a straw and the bus with a dragon that breaths fire.ĭe la Pena uses Dialogue to narrate the experience of going on a bus to the Soup Kitchen between CJ and her Nana and the other characters that ride the bus. He uses Simile to describe and compare two things. The author uses many languages to write this book. When CJ started to help in the Soup Kitchen he was glad to be there. ![]() CJ and his Nana walked in the rain and took the bus to help in the Soup Kitchen. CJ and his Nana got off the bus and walked through a dirty street with graffiti until they got to the Soup Kitchen. When the bus driver announced the last stop “Market Street”. Matt didn’t mention the place where CJ and his Nana were going until the end. This helped CJ to enjoy his ride on the bus. An interesting conversation with a blind man, and the free concert that a man with a guitar offered to all the passengers on the bus. His ride on the bus was a wonderful experience that started with a magic trick which the bus driver performed for CJ. For example, a tree that needs to drink water and it drinks it with a straw, or a bus that breaths fire. CJ asked his Nana “How come we gotta wait for the bus in all this wet?” “Why come we don’t get a car?” “How come we always gotta go here after church?” His Nana answered to CJ’ questions with sweet answers that develops CJ’s imagination. The book starts with CJ a little African American boy who after going to church with his Nana starts to complain about walking under the rain and taking the bus while his friend ride in their dad’s car. Matt De La Pena made a wonderful job describing the beauty of life through a common bus ride experience. In 2016, he received the Caldecott Honor Book Award and the Newberry Medal for the book Last Stop on Market Street. In 2017, Matt wrote the picture book Miguel and the Grand Harmony, which became the popular movie COCO released by Disney. He lives in Brooklyn New York and goes around high schools talking to students about creative writing. He got his Masters in creative writing from San Diego State University.
